ning

Ning (Ning.com) is an open web-based platform where people can create their own social network.

The word ning means "peace" in Chinese.

Ning competes with other social networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace by giving individuals the option to create specific, topic-based networks and add the features that they want to use around their own designs.

Ning has both paid and free options on the website. The free access includes advertisements by Ning and limits the number of bandwidth a network creator can use.

If a creator of the network chooses, they can control the ads themselves for a monthly fee. Premium features include extra storage and bandwidth as well as increased theme customization.

Ning's service is programmed with PHP and the platform is built in Java.
