notre dame
The Catholic university in South Bend, Indiana is a fine academic institution, but when most people talk about Notre Dame in the blogosphere they're referring to the university's Fighting Irish sports teams, especially their football team. Iconic names and figures like Knute Rockne, George "The Gipper" Gipp, Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, Touchdown Jesus, and The Leprechaun make the team stand out like a sore green thumb.
The team also stands out in that it's the only major football program that does not belong to a conference. (All other athletics are aligned with the Big East Conference.) Furthermore, Irish football has an exclusive TV network deal with NBC that will last at least through 2015. What other team could pull that off?
While the football team has a national fanbase, some around the country are less than impressed with their scheduling habits, their recent record in bowl games, and believe they are no longer a national powerhouse. But everyone mired in this perpetual debate can probably agree that their signature gold helmet is one of the classiest looks in the game.
