Nymphs are weighted insect imitations used by fly fishermen to induce fish to eat. They're also a fantasy woman every fisherman hopes to meet around the next bend, clad in revealing clothing, immune to the drone of mosquitoes, and looking for a real outdoorsman versus the metrosexual bar trash she's accustomed to encounter.

Aquatic insects spend years wandering around the streambed before exploding into a terrestrial insect. Fly fishermen tie imitations out of animal fur and feathers - weighted with lead wire or brass beads, and drift these into the fish's likely holding water.

Nymph fishing is a means of prospecting for fish that are largely invisible, relying on the fly to get down to their level encouraging them to eat.

What fishermen fail to consider is that should they actually meet their fantasy, while she sunbathes fetchingly - they'll make a poor first impression, what with fish guts and perspiration pre-announcing their presence.

  • Winter Fly Fishing in the Smoky Mountains

    R and R Fly FishingAuthority Authority: 104
Winter has certainly arrived in the Smoky Mountains with the first significant snowfall of the year. We got a few inches of snow here in Townsend, but there was more only a short distance away in the national park. Charity and I took the kids out for a romp in the snow but didn’t get any fishing in. Snow always ...

This a great stillwater pattern popular in the Pacific NW and B.C. and for all I know beyond. I have never fished it for stream born insects but imagine it could serve well as an October Caddis. The dubbed body can be replaced by a wound body of yarn, chenille or the classic…peacock herl. The hardest part of the fly ...

After a weekend of guiding in the Smokies we’re still happy to report the fish are still active. In fact, we pulled a good number of fish up to the surface on dry flies. On the other hand, it doesn’t look like the tailwater situation will get any better in the near future hear in East Tennessee. Little Dun ...

  • Fly Fish Streams in the Smokies; Tennessee and North Carolina Tailwaters are All Running High

This is a rare event, but fishing on area tailwaters is pretty tough right now. Everything from Middle Tennessee to Western North Carolina is either generating a ton of water or spilling to reduce reservoir levels. The creeks are definitely the place to be. While the mountain streams are running a little high, ...

Waters have receded and streams are fishable in the Smokies, but it’s that time of year when I start tying the flies. When most tyers sit at the vise they’ll tie a few of their favorites, then go fishing or do something else. When I sit at the vise I don’t leave until I’ve tied at least a dozen. A few hours ...
