NYPD is an acronym which stands for the New York Police Department. This group of letters has become popular in today's culture due to many television shows with it in their titles. They also use it as a typical theme for dramas such as NYPD Blue, Castle, CSI:NY, and The Unusuals. NBC has even made a franchise out of NYPD by using it as a backdrop for Law and Order, plus its spinoffs Law and Order:SVU and Law and Order:Criminal Intent.

The NYPD performs several functions of law enforcement including arrest, detection, crime prevention, and forensics. While some of the crimes they handle are serious, others are quite amusing. With all of the advances in technology, some criminals are much more sophisticated than they used to be. Members of the public are often asked for help via the usage of websites, blogs, and Amber alerts.
