obituaries
An obituary is an announcement, usually in a newspaper, of a person's death, often with a short account of their life.
Originally written in a concise manner, and sometimes including significant events in the life of the deceased, an obituary may include the schools he or she attended, any degrees attained, any vocations or interests that the deceased had and the significant events in the life of the deceased. It is common to include a list of those who have survived the deceased.
Over time obituaries morphed into more than a ‘good-bye’ to the deceased. They became a less than 250 word outstanding biography, examples of which can be found in The Last Word: The New York Times Book of Obituaries and Farewells - A Celebration of Unusual Lives.
Newspapers generally consider the obituary notice a paid listing, viewed as advertisements they are usually handled by the Classified Advertising Department. Obituaries can be found online via a newspaper's website, and also via online sites where one can place an "ad," free or paid, at a virtual obituary site, or virtual cemetery.
