occupy wall street
Occupy Wall Street is a protest movement which was initiated on September 27, 2011, in New York City's financial district. The movement was launched by the Canada based non profit organization Adbusters Media Foundation and has spread to nearly all major western cities. While it was initially devised as an anti-capitalist protest against Wall Street bankers and triggered by the global financial crisis, the Occupy movement has come to be an international protest against any type of economic or social inequality.
Adbusters claimed inspiration from the Arab Spring, which was a wave of demonstrations and civil uprisings occurring in the Arab World during the winter of 2010 and spring of 2011. Occupy Wall Street's most popular slogan is "We are the 99%", referring to the concentration of wealth among the top 1% income earners, which includes corporate top management and bankers, viewed in contrast with the much smaller earnings of common people, or the other 99% of the population.
