An oil is a substance with unique chemical properties, which presents several defining characteristics, including retaining a liquid form at ambient temperatures and not mixing with water. There are several types of oils, such as vegetable, petrochemical, synthetic and volatile essential oils.

Organic oils are produced by plants and animals via different metabolic processes. They can be extracted directly from plants, through various processes, such as cold pressing. Crude oil, or petroleum, is considered a mineral oil, because it is extracted at great depths from rock sediments. However, petroleum is a natural byproduct of fossilized marine zoo- and phytoplankton, which has been converted to oil through geochemical processes. Etymologically speaking, petroleum means "rock oil", or oil that has been extracted from rock sediments. As sand and rock deposit on seabeds over dead algae and zooplankton, petroleum is formed over millions of years in the absence of oxygen and under tremendous pressures.

Petroleum is composed primarily of hydrogen, carbon, with trace amounts of metals, oxygen, salts and sulfur. It is obtained mainly through drilling in oilfields, which are vast areas with an abundance of oil reservoirs. Oilfield drilling equipment is used to dig wells and exploit the natural resource. Petroleum reservoirs can be found either on land or on the seabed, therefore a distinction is made between onshore and offshore oil drilling. New and used oilfield equipment can be acquired from companies that specialize in targeting the needs of the oil and gas industry. As oil reservoirs are often located in remote areas, a camp is usually arranged to enable a smooth drilling operation. Extraction is enabled with a drilling rig, which is a large machine designed to create shafts in the ground.

Petroleum and its byproducts have become immensely important to modern day economy, and are considered critical resources for any country. It is currently one of mankind's most important sources of fuel, but also has multiple uses in agriculture (such as being used to obtain fertilizers and pesticides), the pharmaceutical industry and the cosmetic industry. Nearly all plastic is derived from petrochemicals, as well as synthetic rubber, asphalt (or bitumen) and lubricants. Moreover, petroleum derivatives are used to manufacture furniture, photographic film, detergents, upholstery and even artificial fibers found in clothing.
