organic produce
The term produce is used to describe any sort of fresh farm-produced goods. Although produce is usually used to refer to vegetables and fruits, its meaning can be extended to include meats, grains and fresh dairy products.
Organic produce refers to vegetables that are grown with methods that do not involve the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, additives, irradiation, and do not contain genetically modified organisms.
Vegetables and other agricultural products were, until recent decades, considered to be 100% organic foods, however the 20th century has seen the introduction of synthetic chemicals in this sector of the food industry. These chemicals can fulfill various functions, such as strengthening the plant, immunizing it against parasites, speeding growth, prolonging shelf-life, increasing plant and fruit size, etc.
Unfortunately, there are numerous health-risks associated with the production and consumption of chemically treated produce. At the moment, the organic produce sector is heavily regulated, and farmers need to obtain a special certification to be able to sell their produce as organic. As general awareness grows in relation to the benefits of consuming organic foods, the organic produce sector is rapidly expanding both in Europe and North America.
