osx
Apple’s desktop operating system, Mac OS X, is considered the soul of the Macintosh. This BSD-based OS is built on technologies developed at NeXT that were acquired by Apple in early 1996. The first consumer-oriented release of OS X was in March, 2001. Since then, Apple has had a very aggressive release schedule with significant updates coming every 12 to 24 months.
All versions of OS X have an associated “big cat” code name - 10.0 was “Cheetah”, 10.1 was “Puma” and so on. Over time, Apple began using the code names in marketing materials and even began branding the releases, starting with OS X “Jaguar”. A client version and a server version are usually released in parallel.
As with Apple hardware, there is a huge rumor ecosystem based on speculation of what features the next release will hold. There are also many tip sites and troubleshooting sites to help with operating system issues or running software on these operating systems.
