If a painter is an artist then a painting is their product. In the world of art, a painting is the practice of applying paint to a surface. While traditionally this surface is paper or canvas, in reality it can be anything from wood, to brick, to a large grass field.

To the artist, painting is their mode of their expression and the style of their work is as plentiful as the people who turn out the creations. A painting can be realistic where the artist tries to make everything look like real life, it can be abstract where the art takes on how the artist feels about the subject, or it can be almost anything in between.

While there have been paintings that date back to the days of the cave dwellers, through Egyptian times, Ancient Greece, and the Roman Empire, it was Giotto who is credited with bringing in the modern era of painting.

Since his death in the 14th century, there have been many great paintings created by the likes of Botticelli, da Vinci, Rembrandt, Vermeer, van Gogh, Picasso, and Dali.

While the traditional materials exist, the painting of the 21st century and beyond is largely like the photograph, and has taken to the digital realm. With the use of products like Corel Painter, and online training, there is no telling what new trends lay ahead.
