Ever since Hellboy released in 2004, things have changed quite a lot as far as Guillermo del Toro was concerned. Firstly, Hellboy turned out to be a monster hit with the critics and audience loving it. After that Pan’s Labyrinth happened which made him a critically acclaimed director.

He is the busiest director in the world. He is right now collaboration with crime author Chuck Hogan on a trilogy of vampire’s novels, starting next summer with “The Strain”. “The idea is epic in scope,” del Toro said in a statement issued Wednesday by publisher William Morrow, an imprint of Harper Collins.

Netflix adventures I haven’t said much about movies lately. It isn’t that I’ve quit watching. Just that I haven’t had much to say about the movies I have watched. Ghosts of Abu Ghraib is not a film I feel competent to review.

In what could quite possibly be the best news I’ve heard in the past few months regarding movies, I stumble upon a tidbit on The Hobbit. As I mentioned previously, Guillermo Del Toro will be directing The Hobbit. And briefly, for those that don’t know, Guillermo Del Toro is the man behind Hellboy & Pan’s Labyrinth…and The Hobbit is the prequel to Lord of the Rings.

A few spoilers ahead. Guillermo del Toro with cast. I like Abe Sapiens’ posture here. Fiona’s a massive Guillermo del Toro fan, and I generally like him. Our favourite is THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE. So it was with some excitement we sloped off to a preview screening of HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY, but with disappointment we sloped out afterwards.

I finished watching Pan’s Labyrinth yesterday, and while I didn’t find it as impressive as I had hoped, there were still many parts of the movie that strongly resonated with me. For example, I liked the thrown around idea of story and social construction as a powerful weapon against authoritarianism,

[ View Image (945×640) ] Ivana Baquero puts in one of the best kids performances in a film in recent memory as Ofelia in Pan’s Labyrinth. I still remember seeing this for the first time at Fantastic Fest and the first time I saw it at Sitges. This is one of those timeless films that never ages and only gets better.
