panic

Panic is a serious and unpleasant emotional state caused by a generalized belief that one is in danger or under attack. Panic is an extreme form of fear which is often accompanied by wildly unthinking behavior. Like all forms of fear, panic is always triggered by the possibility of a future event, rather than by an event which has already occurred. The physiological response to the panic emotion can be severe and may require medical intervention for what is termed a panic attack.

One of the common occurrences of the term panic in the blogosphere is in the phrase "don't panic," used both for serious possibilities such as a global flu pandemic and regarding lesser crises such as the outcome of a sporting event.

Panic can also refer to a financial panic, panic selling of stocks or other securities or investments, or the band Widespread Panic.
