password

A password in technology terms is usually a set of characters that are used to gain entrance to a service, device or software. Passwords are largely used to protect user accounts either in an operating system or on the Internet.

Most Internet sites that with restricted areas require the user to enter a username and password to access the contents. Having to enter a username and password ensures that specific contents can be served to the user. A Facebook login will for instance display the users activities, friends and all the other information of that account.

Passwords are also used to retrieve emails, access administrative contents on websites or in programs, allow access to paid services on the Internet or to encrypt and protect data.

Researchers are constantly trying to find alternatives to character based passwords. This includes biometric authentication methods, graphical passwords or public key cryptography.
