Patches refers to a repairing method such as to patch pants or to repair software glitches such as a patch for Microsoft™ Vista. A patch can also be an embroidered emblem that you add to clothing for its symbolic and aesthetic value. Girl scouts must complete tasks and challenges in order to earn badges that are patches for their scout sash. Harley Davidson™ and other embroidered patches are popular choices for emblem patches for jackets, jeans and clothing.

In software, a patch can be used to sort out problems or bugs in the software or can add improvements quickly to existing applications without the need for a complete re-installation of the product. Anti-viral software can be critical in preventing problems from installing patches.
