A pellet may refer to something that has been reduced in size and compacted. It may also be a spherical object. The first description fits well with what is done to wood chips, grasses, and energy crops to form what has come to be known as biomass pellets. These pellets are a carbon-neutral form of energy, which means they add no additional carbon dioxide to the atmosphere when they are burned for fuel.

Biomass materials are a renewable form of energy. Two of the most common uses of biomass pellets are fuel and animal feed. Because the pellets are so compacted, they store conveniently in tight or small spaces because they can be stacked, and their size is precisely regulated for fuel and feed.

Other mentions of pellets could be in reference to the metal shot that is fired from a gun. Also, hiking in wilderness area or in the outdoors generally, one can easily come across small, black animal droppings, which dung is at times affectionately and politely referred to as pellets.
