periodicals
Periodicals are publications, usually of the printed variety, which are published on a regular, ongoing, recurring schedule. The term is most often used when referring to printed magazines, although newspapers are also referred to as periodicals. There are periodicals for every interest from business to current events to music to cooking and even more esoteric interests. There are two main ways to purchase periodicals: individually at a store or newstand or by subscribing to the magazine. Some periodicals contain adult or pornographic content and their sale is regulated.
Periodicals by definition are not internet publications, however the Web does feature many unique magazine sites of its own. The printed magazines and periodicals you find at the corner newsstand increasingly also will often have their own online counterparts today.
Periodicals and web magazines share a number of common traits such as a regular publication schedule. Most also contain their own extensive news archives. But where internet publications are usually updated daily — or, in some cases, even hourly — periodicals most often adhere to regular weekly, monthly, or bi-monthly publication dates.
