Mark Twain once said that "Golf is a good walk, ruined." Although anyone who has ever picked up a golf club might agree with Twain wholeheartedly, it must be agreed that the game of golf has come a long way since Twain once walked those fabled courses around the turn of the century.

Since roughly 1916, the PGA (Professional Golfers Association) has made it its mission to elevate and refine the game of golf to new heights and levels of respectability. It has set itself up as the experts in the game and business of golf, and has made this its mission to lead the industry, create tournaments and championships (Ryder Cup, PGA Championship, etc.), and stimulate interest in the game itself in the general public.

The PGA accomplishes this mission in many ways. It employs people who are trained and certified to help educate and promote the game of golf. It puts on tournaments and championships that get world-wide attention and rewards the winners of these tournaments with a ton of "Presidential Flash Cards." The PGA also gives funds to many golf programs in an effort to engender interest in the game and get young people and minorities to pick up the sport.
