When it comes to phone cards, there is a theme that runs through every single one: The actual card is absolutely worthless! It means nothing!

In all reality, the only things that matter on phone cards are the access telephone number and the PIN number attached to the card. As long as the user has these two items in their noggin, the actual card is obsolete. In fact, these phone cards are so obsolete that many phone card services have done away with them completely. The service is sold online and sent via email—no card is ever even manufactured!

There is a new trend that is really starting to get some traction lately. Since the late 2000s calling card service providers have introduced calling accounts which do not require a physical card. Calling accounts can be purchased over the internet using credit cards and are instantly delivered to the customer via e-mail. This e-mail contains the PIN and instructions for using the service. The service may be prepaid, or may take payment from a credit card. Some prepaid phone cards even allow accounts to be recharged online manually or automatically via a method called auto-top-up.
