This week was big for openings and pisco cocktails. I hit up La Mar early in the week, where I had some pisco drinks and lunch, then the new bar called Pisco just for pisco drinks. This bar was supposed to open in August (I wrote a story about it for that issue of San Francisco Magazine) but they had problems with handicapped accessibility due to the gradient slope of the street outside.

Yesterday I had a chance to check out La Mar Cebicher'ia Peruana, the fancy new Peruvian restaurant opening up on Pier 1 1/2 in San Francisco. Gorgeous space, delicious food. But you don't come to Alcademics to read about food. The drink menu is all about pisco, listing 12 pisco-based cocktails.

A Taste of the Hamptons It's pretty safe to say that the Hamptons is not your average beach scene. Where else do kids sell virgin mojitos at their corner stand instead of old-fashioned lemonade? So, for the last party of the summer, it was only fitting that it was more blow-out-bash than BBQ.

The other night I found myself at Nopa, a San Francisco restaurant known for its great food and equally respectable drinks. My drink of choice was the pisco sour, the slightly sweet, tart, frothy lemon cocktail made with pisco, a regional South American brandy.

This month’s Mixology Monday sees me without ready access to a bar to mix a drink.  On well, I’m going to go ahead and post something anyway.  The theme this month is New Orleans cocktails, so I thought I could post a couple of tips related to making drinks containing egg white, with particular reference to that venerable old New Orleans drink - the Ramos Gin Fizz.

‘The Lads’, as I came to refer to them, were precisely that: three ruddy, twenty-ish Irish boys - not the slight, poetic type, but the athletic, overgrown footballer variety.
