Now open
http://www.alcademics.com/ 2008/ 09/ now-open.htmlThis week was big for openings and pisco cocktails. I hit up La Mar early in the week, where I had some pisco drinks and lunch, then the new bar called Pisco just for pisco drinks. This bar was supposed to open in August (I wrote a story about it for that issue of San Francisco Magazine) but they had problems with handicapped accessibility due to the gradient slope of the street outside.

The bar at La Mar
http://www.alcademics.com/ 2008/ 09/ the-bar-at-la-mar.htmlYesterday I had a chance to check out La Mar Cebicher'ia Peruana, the fancy new Peruvian restaurant opening up on Pier 1 1/2 in San Francisco. Gorgeous space, delicious food. But you don't come to Alcademics to read about food. The drink menu is all about pisco, listing 12 pisco-based cocktails.

MxMo 19th Century, The Japanese Cocktail
http://www.tradertiki.com/ mxmo-19th-century-the-japanese-cocktail/Many thanks to this Mixology Monday’s hosts at Bibulo.us, sending us back in time (and into the library) for some 19th Century Cocktails! As read in Imbibe! by David Wondrich, in 1860, diplomats from Japan made a few weeks stay in New York City. While there, they stayed at the Metropolitan hotel,

A Taste of the Hamptons
http://www.notesonaparty.com/ index.php/ 2008/ 09/ 04/ a-taste-of-the-hamptons/A Taste of the Hamptons It's pretty safe to say that the Hamptons is not your average beach scene. Where else do kids sell virgin mojitos at their corner stand instead of old-fashioned lemonade? So, for the last party of the summer, it was only fitting that it was more blow-out-bash than BBQ.

Happy Hour: Pisco Sour
http://www.yumsugar.com/ 1874816The other night I found myself at Nopa, a San Francisco restaurant known for its great food and equally respectable drinks. My drink of choice was the pisco sour, the slightly sweet, tart, frothy lemon cocktail made with pisco, a regional South American brandy.

Mixology Monday: Revisiting the Ramos Gin Fizz, Pisco Sour and other Frothy Concoctions
http://bunnyhugs.org/ 2008/ 07/ 28/ mixology-monday-revisiting-the-ramos-gin-fiz…This month’s Mixology Monday sees me without ready access to a bar to mix a drink. On well, I’m going to go ahead and post something anyway. The theme this month is New Orleans cocktails, so I thought I could post a couple of tips related to making drinks containing egg white, with particular reference to that venerable old New Orleans drink - the Ramos Gin Fizz.

Mucho Macho a Machu Picchu
http://godonnybrook.com/ home/ ?p=1068‘The Lads’, as I came to refer to them, were precisely that: three ruddy, twenty-ish Irish boys - not the slight, poetic type, but the athletic, overgrown footballer variety. I hadn’t met any of them yet; their musical gibberish played upon itself and created a layer of comfort in my mind - like watching one of those old BBC programs on PBS.

Two Unusual Quinquinas: RinQuinQuin and Orange Colombo
http://bunnyhugs.org/ 2008/ 06/ 15/ two-unusual-quinquinas-rinquinquin-and-orang…To assist my anticipatory salivation ahead of Anistatia Miller and Jared Brown’s Tales of the Cocktail presentation on “The Cafes of Paris”, I have been taking a look at a few lesser known French aperitifs. Several weeks ago I took a look at Pineau des Charentes. Today I focus on a pair of [...]

I drank San Francisco
http://drinkboston.com/ 2008/ 06/ 01/ i-drank-san-francisco/OK, assuming you’ve read parts 1 and 2 of this series, you’ve gathered that I drank San Francisco. But I haven’t even told you about all the bars yet! I just want to show you a few more pics and say this: San Francisco’s a great drinking town not only because it is the West [...]
