In the shoe world, platforms, by definition, are thick inserts of leather, cork, or other sturdy material between the uppers and the sole of a shoe, usually intended for stylish effect or to give added height to the wearer.

Platform shoes are shoes, boots, or sandals with thick soles with the soles and heels often made of cork, plastic, rubber, or wood. Despite popular belief, platform shoes are more about the soles of the shoes as opposed to the heels.

Popularity of platforms skyrocketed amongst many age groups and classes of men and women in the 1970s. Their popularity has flourished, with many couture designers coming up with their own unique spin on the shoe.
