There are three great over-arching rules in life. First, "Do unto others as you would have done unto you." Second, "If you're a girl, it's immoral to lead on a nerd." And third, "If you're a plumber, don't chew your fingernails."

Besides those three great rules in life, you will find plumbers have their own code or set of rules that they all follow. These rules may vary slightly from plumbing San Francisco style to plumbing Detroit style, but most are pretty common amongst all plumbers. Here are a few:

1) "Water flows downhill."
2) "Always make the clean-outs accessible." (A clean-out is no use to anyone if it cannot be reached or accessed.)
3) "Whenever the option is available, bring as much of the actual part in to the hardware store as possible." (Finding the right replacement part can sometimes be extremely difficult.)

If you ever walk downstairs and see that the sewer has backed up in your basement, chances are you are going to need some plumbing done. Remember these rules or else hire a professional who knows them by heart. Bloggers helping out on the plumbing front can be found at sites like myplumbingportal and askaplumber.
