Porcupine Tree is a British progressive rock band led by prolific singer/songwriter/guitarist Steven Wilson. Over the years, Wilson and Porcupine Tree have developed a wildly devoted fan base throughout the world with their interesting and eclectic mix of progressive rock textures and harder rocking heavy metal. On their earliest albums, such as the double disc The Sky Moves Sideways, the group explores Pink Floyd-ian space rock on songs like the epic title track, which clocks in at about 35 minutes in it's two separate parts (Phase 1 and Phase 2). On latter albums like 2007's Fear Of A Blank Planet, the group favors a harder approach, combining the sort of complex, intricately played hard rock that draws comparisons to bands like Rush, with bursts of bludgeoning metal guitar.
As the group's principal songwriter, Steven Wilson is also a talented singer, guitarist, and multi-instrumentalist whose output has been prolific. In addition to Porcupine Tree, Wilson fronts a number of side-projects. These include the mainly acoustic pop duo Blackfield (with Israeli musician Aviv Geffen), the avant synth-pop group No-Man, and the ambient Bass Communion recordings. Wilson released his first solo album, Insurgentes, in early 2009.
