A potty is a type of bathroom fixture that isn't connected to plumbing system by which the waste can be disposed. Potty is generally used to refer to a type of chamber pot that is used by children. In the past, chamber pots were used in the bedroom so that the user didn't have to travel a long distance in poor lighting to meet their needs. Instead, they kept a bowl in their waterclosets, which would be emptied the following morning. For children, the size of a normal toilet seat is much too large, as it is designed to fit an adult's buttock. A child risks falling into the waste. To deal with this problem, portable potty seats have been developed that rest on top of the normal toilet seat and provide the child with the safety of a smaller hole.

Over the years, potty has become part of the colloquial name for any portable toilet facility, including the adult porta potty. These only offer a single stall designed to accommodate a single user. They are typically used when other toilets are not easily available, usually for events which are temporary, and therefor do not have established and permanent sanitation facilities. For festivities in a municipality, the sudden increase in the number of partrons would represent an unnecessary strain on local businesses, as well as very likely not meet the needs of so many people. In some city centers, portable toilets are a regular feature provided by the local municipality to alleviate the year round burden of paying for public toilet usage.

Despite their lack of plumbing, a porta potty will still include many of the normal features of a permanent bathroom, including hand sanitizer, a sink, a secondary fixture of a urinal, toilet paper, and a deodorizer. Even without plumbing, many portable toilets will still supply sink water, though it much be prompted by a foot lever, and comes from a limited supply.

Portable toilets are generally supplied by a rental company that also agrees to provide maintenance such as draining and cleaning. Waste is collected into a tank below the toilet seat, and is regularly emptied and sanitized by the company which supplies the toilet.
