Pregnancy is the carrying of an offspring known as a fetus or embryo, inside the uterus of a female. Obstetrics is the surgical field that studies and cares for high risk pregnancy while midwifery is the non-surgical field caring for pregnant women. Childbirth normally occurs about 38 weeks after conception or approximately 40 weeks from the last normal menstrual period.

Pregnancy is divided into 3 trimester periods. The first carries the highest risk of miscarriage. The development of the fetus during the second trimester can be more easily monitored and diagnosed. The final trimester is the period when the fetus could survive (with or without medical help) outside of the uterus if absolutely necessary. Obviously, everything is done to ensure that the pregnancy runs to full term to try and ensure a healthy baby.

Having a baby can be an exciting time and the new mom-to-be cannot wait to prepare for her baby. Even if is the 2nd or 3rd pregnancy, that nesting feeling is difficult to ignore.
