prepaid

"Prepaid" is a term that usually refers to a product or service that has been paid for beforehand. Most commonly used to refer to telephone and prepaid phone cards, prepaid can also refer to gift cards for a retailer, a gift card for a restaurant, or even a prepaid credit card.


Prepaid services are markedly different than Postpaid (or "contract") services. While a prepaid service refers to a service or product that has been paid for in advance, a postpaid service is something that is paid for AFTER the product or service is received.

The postpaid service is typically accompanied by some sort of interest rate as well as the initial cost. Prepaid services are purchased before the transaction is made and are almost never associated with any interest. The smart consumer is always better off using the prepaid services as opposed to the postpaid services for that very reason.


Prepaid services are sometimes marketed towards consumers with poor credit, students, or those with low income. The prepaid service providers try to "hedge their bets" by forcing the consumer to purchase the product with cash upfront so there is no risk of the consumer defaulting.
