Joan Rivers once said, "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is God's gift, that's why we call it the present."

Although the present time is certainly a "present," in this article we are going to concentrate on presents as gifts.

Presents can say so much about the gift giver. When done properly, it tells the person you are giving the gift to, "I know you well and I know you will like this..." It can be a very meaningful thing.

On the other hand, we have all been witnesses to BAD gift giving. When someone has no idea what the other person would like, so they just get something that they would like to get themselves (but it is nothing at all what the other person would like), that is a bad present. This situation is much like watching porcupines mate... very, very uncomfortable. In many ways, a bad gift can be a body blow wrapped in a bouquet.
