When Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press back in 1436, it revolutionized the world. Gutenberg's press rode the Renaissance Era that was quickly sweeping through Europe and the rest of the world, and soon it was the greatest invention of that century. Gutenberg's press eventually replaced block printing, making it the most used format of modern movable type in the world.

And with that, the evolution of printing took off at a breakneck speed. It not only made books cheaper so the common man could begin to read, become educated, and begin climbing the social echelons of class, but it made the Bible accessible to laymen — changing the course of religion forever. The clergy no longer had a monopoly on literacy and no longer had control over what was taught to the people.

The book was the first major milestone in printing, but it was not the last. Movable type printing came next, followed by the rotary printing press, offset printing, ink jet printing, and finally, the digital printing of today.

Nowadays, everything from meeting minutes to club flyers are printed and distributed via printing. And we have a brilliant goldsmith named Gutenberg to thank for it.
