Protein is one of the three major macro-nutrients necessary for optimal health. Protein is made up of chains of amino acids, which are known as the building blocks of protein. Aside from being an energy source, protein also regulates body processes responsible for transporting nutrients, the balancing of water levels, and tissue repair and synthesis of new cells.

High amounts of protein are also available in dairy foods like milk, cheese, and yogurt. While many foods like beans and rice have protein they are an incomplete protein and must be combined to form a complete protein that has the entire amino acid profile.
Many popular weight loss diets are based on taking in high levels of protein due to its effects on muscle retention. However high protein diets like the Atkins that promise a way to lose weight fast can also have their drawbacks. Many experts agree that a proper balance of protein, carbohydrates, and fat is the healthiest nutritional strategy to follow for long term health.
