psychedelic rock

Tag details

When you think of psychedelic rock, visions of the sixties, drugs, and hippies spring to mind almost as often as music does. Certainly, the music has its roots in all of these things.

Where psychedelic music actually came from is an open debate, but most agree that 1960s San Francisco was certainly a flashpoint. Performed in Bay Area dance halls like the Avalon Ballroom and the original Fillmore Auditorium by bands like the Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead, psychedelic rock concerts were true happenings, featuring trippy light shows and improvisational jamming considered wildly experimental at the time. Psychedelic bands also headlined the top music festivals of the day at Monterey and Woodstock.

Across the pond in England, bands like Pink Floyd, Cream, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and eventually even the Beatles themselves were soon making psychedelic music of their own. Psychedelic music lives on today within the blogosphere, where bloggers discuss modern festivals like Bonnaroo and bands like the Mars Volta, Flaming Lips, and especially jam bands like My Morning Jacket and Phish at blogs like Psychedelic Lion.

For once I do think that this band will only appeal to a few on here and thats understandable but they remain a perennial favourite for me. Maybe they are a bit too mainstream when compared with the likes of Spooky tooth, Gentle Giant, and Caravan. But this dosent have to be a thread about Dark ...

QMS is truly one of the first bands of its genre, leading many other bands to follow from the mid 60s on. I only wish I was not 19 and could have seen them live back in the day. Lately Iv been into there Self ...
