A puppy is a young dog usually less than one year of age. Worldwide pet ownership varies from 30% to 55% in the US, UK and Canada. Puppies are a large part of that population. Puppy size varies with breed and may range from 1 pound to more than 20 pounds. All healthy puppies go through a rapid growth cycle before becoming a full grown dog.

Selecting a puppy should be a carefully researched and thoughtful decision as a puppy will require a great deal of attention and training. Experts advise that you select a puppy from a reputable breeder, well managed shelter or quality hobby breeder. Puppy mills are breeders that use horrible conditions, poor care and deplorable treatment to produce as many puppies as possible; often the puppies are sold to pet stores with a wide range of health problems and behavioral issues. Pure bred puppies, meaning one breed of dog is bred with the same breed of dog to produce puppies should be registered with the Canadian Kennel Club or American Kennel Club.

Many people blog actively about puppies. The most common type of puppy blog is the user-submission blog, where puppy and dog owners submit funny pictures of their beloved pets.

Most puppy blogs center around user submissions of their puppy breeds along with pictures. Puppies can be loving, engaging and charming pets and may improve the quality of life and even the health of the owners, but they require attention, love, training and medical care to grow into healthy, happy dogs.
