Ranking high in search engines using search engine optimization techniques, also known as SEO, can be the least expensive internet marketing methods to get targeted traffic back to a website. Search engines like Google use a proprietary algorithm to determine ranking. The algorithm is kept a secret and leads to a lot of speculation on how to rank higher but it has been proven that building backlinks can show popularity to a site which in turn can help to increase web traffic.

To achieve a high website ranking there are both onsite and offsite SEO factors to consider. Some onsite factors include the page title, and heading or H1. Keyword density also plays a part in onsite page ranking so that search engines can return the most relevant web pages in relation to the search term used. Prior to starting a website most internet marketers will use a keyword research tool to find out where the strongest and weakest competition is in order to determine the best entry point for a niche.
