recycle
Recycling is the technique of processing used items into new products, in order to avoid wasting potentially useful materials. For example, used bottles can be melted down and the glass turned into new bottles, jars, or "glassphalt." Without recycling, these bottles would be sent to a landfill, where they take an as-yet-unknown time to biodegrade (so far our best guess is "never").
Recycling is a great way to keep trash out of landfills and to make best use of our existing resources. Many blogs and websites offer tips and tactics for recycling common household goods.
However, recycling is not always cost-efficient and sometimes downright ineffectual, creating more pollution than it saves. Debates and articles on the subject can be found throughout the blogosphere. Overall, though, recycling is considered to be a worthwhile use of resources, as everything from plastic to electronics can be processed. Still, common sense dictates that we should all re-use as many objects as possible, and not discard them (even to the recycling bin) until absolutely necessary.
