reference

In the work world, a reference is the name of a former employer, professional colleague or personal friend that can vouch for the work ethic, employment verification and professional behavior of a job applicant. In the case of professional services personnel, a reference is often a list of clients with whom the person has done business with previously.

Additionally, a reference can refer to any collection of data that is openly or privately cited in a public document to serve to create a point of reference to backup the findings of the information. For example, a ‘how to’ website might reference longstanding published data from Universities. An alternative health website might reference authority medical websites in the same genre.

Blogs on references related to employment usually contain tips and techniques for choices references appropriately. It is good practice and form to ask before citing someone as a reference, and to call or notify them in advance of each usage of their name. US News and World Report’s Money and Business offers a blog on job references
