register domain name
When someone plans to register a domain name there is much discussion on what is considered a good domain name and what is considered a bad domain name.
A domain name is the bit that goes after the www. A domain ends in .com, .net, .org or one of many other extensions. There are also extensions such as .gov (for government sites) and .edu (for education related sites). Country specific extensions also exist such as .co.uk for the UK. The extension is an important point to consider when someone begins the process to register a domain name.
A domain name is the foundation for the web site that it is attached to. It is suggested that an SEO friendly, keyword rich domain far outweighs any other "clever" name that someone intends to register. Keyword rich domain names may allow a site to rank higher in the search engines over its competitors. Clearly, if a site is called creditcards.com it is about credit cards and Google may keep that result closer to (or at) the top when someone searches for "credit cards". It just makes sense.
You'll find bloggers talking about domain names at sites like The Domain Names Blog and Dot Com Domain Names.
