registered dietitian
Food and nutrition are popular subjects in the blogosphere. And why not? Everyone eats and cares about their health. But how do you know whether nutrition advice is science-based? That's where registered dietitians (RDs) come in. An RD is a food and nutrition professional who has been certified by the American Dietetic Association's (ADA) credentialing agency, Commission on Dietetic Registration, as having completed the following:
- Bachelor's degree with approved course work in food and nutrition sciences, food service systems management, business, economics, computer science, sociology, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology and chemistry.
- Supervised, experiential practice program at a health-care facility, community agency or foodservice organization.
- National examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
- Continuing professional educational to maintain registration.
Many RDs host blogs. Here are just a few dietitian-authored blogs: Liz On Food, WebMD Healthy Recipe Doctor, A Dietitian's View, Confessions of an Overweight Dietitian, Meal Makeover Moms, Epicurean Ideal and ADA's RDs Weigh In.
