registry

Tag details

The Windows Registry is a database that stores configuration information on Microsoft Windows operating systems. It was first introduced in Windows 3.1 and has been extended ever since and received its final form with the release of the Windows NT and Windows 95 operating systems.

It contains settings for first and third party applications, the Windows kernel, system drivers, Windows services, the user interface and other configuration settings.

The Registry has six root keys and thousands of subkeys that can be accessed with first party tools that ship with every Windows operating system, through scripts (so called reg scripts), the command line and third party tools.

Many Windows tweaks are applied in the Windows Registry either directly or by tweaking tools that change Registry parameters.

You'll find bloggers talking about the Registry at sites like Windows 7 News and Windows 8 News.
