Tag details

The term renal describes that which pertains to the kidneys and their function. The kidneys have essential regulatory roles in humans and animals, helping to maintain homeostasis by regulating electrolyte balance, reabsorbing water and nutrients, and excreting urine.

Like other organs, the kidneys are also prone to diseases, of which the most common is kidney stones. A kidney stone (or renal calculus) is a small, solid aggregation that forms in the kidney out of dietary minerals.

Kidney stones treatment typically only includes analgesics to manage the pain, as most people are able to pass the stones naturally. Up to 98% of small stones can be passed naturally through urination within a few weeks of the onset of symptoms, but larger stones may require special treatment, such as expulsion therapy or even surgical intervention.

Dietary factors that increase the risk of developing kidney stones include a high intake of animal protein, refined sugars, sodium, supplemental calcium, oxalate, grapefruit and apple juice, as well as cola drinks. Low fluid intake has also been associated with an elevated risk of kidney stones.
