Robotics is a scientific and engineering discipline that deals with all aspects of designing, manufacturing and controlling robots. First recognized as an independent branch of science in the 1960s, with the advent of industrial robots, robotics today has applications ranging from space explorations to health care, education to military and everything in between.

Some of the major fields of study in robotics include manipulation and locomotion, sensing, navigation and interaction with humans. Advances in robotics are directly linked to advances in the general computing technologies because most of the robot controlling aspects require great amounts of computation and data processing.

Although some recent advances in robotics, such as computer vision and pattern recognition, new types of sensors and power sources may not be well-known to the general public, there are several projects that received worldwide recognition and spurred interest in robotics in recent years. These include DARPA Grand Challenge self-controlling cars with grand implications for the transportation systems, self-balancing robots that were commercialized in the famous Segway personal transportation vehicle and Honda's ASIMO humanoid robot among others.
