Roku is an American consumer electronics company that sells streaming entertainment devices. The company manufactures media streamers that grant access to Internet streamed video and audio directly through the television set. On every Roku forum, their devices are praised mainly for their affordability, and free channel and game offers, though they have sometimes also been criticized for visual glitches and poor picture quality.

Roku's main competitor is Apple TV, which has a similar price and provides a series of overlapping services. The main differences between Roku and Apple TV concern the programs that can be accessed by each device, Roku offering a considerably larger catalogue, in addition to the option of hooking your device up to a non-HD TV, which Apple TV does not support.

Roku's first Netflix streaming device came out in 2008, and it ran a version of Linux. By 2010, the streaming device line had expanded to a total of 3 products, namely the Roku SD, HD, and HD-XR, with SD streaming standard definition, HD streaming content of up to 720p, and the HD-XR, which streams content of up to 1080p. In 2010, HD became the standard model, and it also featured 802.11g WiFi and HDMI output.

By mid-2011, Roku had upgraded its streaming device line yet again, keeping the price ranges, and adding a motion control gaming remote only to its flagship XS model. The current generation of Roku streamers also offer the option of displaying subtitles. The most recent addition to the Roku systems was the Roku Search feature, which was released in October 2012.

This feature provides complex search of any title from multiple providers, including Amazon Instant Video, Netflix, and Go. To provide content, Roku partners with companies that provide content through individual channels. Using the Roku Channel Store, users can add or remove channels to their channel list.
