Film director/producer Roman Polanski's life has been one of both triumphs and tragedies. An Academy Award winner (for 2002's The Pianist), Polanski is generally acknowledged as one of the greatest living filmmakers with movies such as Rosemary's Baby and Chinatown all part of his resume.

However, Polanski's notoriety extends beyond his cinematic achievements. In 1969, Polanski's then pregnant wife Sharon Tate's name became forever linked to that of deranged mass murderer Charles Manson, as one of the victims of the infamous Manson Family Murders.

In 1977, Polanski fled to France after his arrest on charges of having sex with a minor — in this case, a girl who was thirteen years old at the time. On September 26, 2009 Polanski was arrested in Switzerland, ending some three decades of life as a fugitive in countries like Poland and France, after that original warrant was first served.
