For amateur and professional runners alike, the debate continues to rage about running on treadmills vs. asphalt. True, treadmills allow you to run year-round, no matter what the weather's doing outside. Of course, treadmills can be a tad tedious, if not downright boring. And, making sure you select the right one is key to making sure you're getting the best workout possible for your investment.

Treadmills don't provide the same workout as running on a hard surface like asphalt. Many have a springboard effect, and as a result, don't work the same muscles that are needed for stability and shock absorption. When a treadmill runner finally runs outdoors, he or she receives not only a more intense workout, but finds some under-developed muscles.

However, treadmills definitely have their place in distance training, especially for those who live in snowbelt regions. Speedwork, hills, and even shorter tempo runs can help keep distance runners stick to their training schedule when footing outdoors is treacherous, or temperatures are frigid.
