Russia is the world's largest country, covering much of Eurasia and a total of more than one eighth of the planet's land area and almost double the size of the United States. Politically Russia is a federation, which was created when the USSR broke up in 1991.

Bloggers are often writing about Russia's strong position in the the gas market and often about the giant firm Gazprom, about the difficulties experienced by minority groups, and about the health and social problems that have followed the end of communism. Many also wrote about the 2008 war between Russia and Georgia.
