santa claus
Santa Claus, who is sometimes known as Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas or just Santa, is legendary figure of folkloric origin who is widely regarded as the patron of Christmas. In Western, predominantly Christian countries, Santa Claus traditionally brings gifts to good children on the Eve of Christmas, December 24.
Santa Claus is based on the Dutch winter holiday figure Sinterklaas, who is still celebrated today in the Netherlands and Belgium on December 6 (Saint Nicholas' day). Due to the many parallels between Sinterklaas celebration and pre-Christian winter festivities, it is held by some that Santa Claus has pagan origins in the indigenous traditions of Germanic people from North and Western Europe.
