security
Security is a term that is used to describe being protected against external threats. Security requires that protective measures be established to protect against a threat. The word secure if often used to describe a condition where security measures have been undertaken.
On the family protection side of things, tried and true methods such as guard dogs, home alarms, and a good old fashioned Louisville slugger are still common practices to maintain the security of one's home.
In the post 9-11 world, security has taken on greater importance. Governments are spending billions of dollars to protect themselves from external entities that threaten national security. Protecting the public from threats such as terrorism have become important issues. Critics claim this increased security has become a threat to privacy and human rights, especially since authorities are relying more and more on vehicle tracking technologies and other devices to monitor civilians.
While in general, security is intended to protect against external threats, it is sometimes also designed to protect from internal threats. When someone is attempting to breach security, one of the best methods is to plant or recruit someone from within.
As technology advances, systems security has become an important issue. Systems now run or control many of the basic tasks in our society. Because of this, systems themselves often are targeted or attacked rather than individuals.
In a digital world, security shredding is often very important to destroy data from hard drives, CD's and other digital media.
