Serial is an adjective that is commonly linked to a number of things.

Serial keys are a particular series of numbers and letters used to activate a piece of software and link it to the unique user who registered it.  These are designed to prevent software piracy by having unique serial keys linked to on particular copy of the software.  Hackers may find ways around it, but this type of copy protection has been prominent and fairly effective for many years.

A serial killer is someone who commits murder multiple times in a patient, deliberate fashion.  Their victims are seldom chosen at random and the crimes tend to fit a pattern that emerges over time to outsiders and authorities.

A serial port is a type of communications port on computers, largely replaced by universal serial bus (USB).  What makes serial ports unique is that data moves in and out of them in a linear fashion, one bit at a time, as opposed to parallel ports, which can receive and transmit data simultaneously.  With that in mind, serial ports were commonly used for input-only devices like mice, trackballs, and stylus pens.
