serotonin
A neurotransmitter is a chemical that transmits nerve impulses. The neurotransmitter serotonin may play a critical role in regulating emotions. Serotonin, a monamine, also known as 5-hydroxytrypamine, is found not only in the brain, central nervous system, and intestines of humans, but also in many animals and plants.
Tryptophan, an essential amino acid necessary to synthesize serotonin must be sourced through the diet. Serotonin levels drop when fasting or in other situations when food is not available. "Feel good" foods, including chicken soup and chocolate may boost serotonin levels because of their relatively rich tryptophan content.
Researchers from the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom have indicated that serotonin may also be involved in regulating combative behavior such as aggression during social decision-making.
