The search engine results page, or SERP, is an arrangement of websites that return potentially useful results based the keywords that are entered in the search bar. Generally the results return in a standard form. They display the page title, an active link to jumo over to the page, and a sample of text from the site, usually containing the key terms, highlighted to indicate the context in which the user's search term is employed. Google is currently the most popular of search engines used, so much so that the act of pulling up a results page is referred to as "Googling", often whether Google is used or not.


The search engines use algorithms that push the results that the user is most likely looking for to the top of the pile. These results are based on term relevance, page rank, and trending topics. Search engine optimization, or SEO, is a drive by site owners to increase the traffic to their particular site. The goal is to organically promote the website to the top of the search return results.


SEO examines what users are actually digging for, and which search engines are preferred by which social groups. They also map which search words people are using, and the sites they are trying to ultimately get to when they use them. Essentially, it's market research in an information culture.


In order to increase a website's circulation, SEO operators may imbed search terms that may not be included in the site's text, to increase the likelihood that users will encounter the site when searching for that term. This is a tactic largely used by advertisers. Users will notice that the first few results at the top of search results are tagged as "sponsored listings". Because major search engines like Google processes a huge amount of traffic, advertisers will pay large sums of money to place their ads where they're going to receive high visibility. Individuals will also manually backlink sites so that search engines find the site connected to a greater number of other sites, increasing it value to the whole, as perceived by automated search engine crawlers.
