The United States of America continues to be more and more of a service-based economy all of the time. At one time a manufacturing-based economy, presently over 50 percent of the labor force is in the service sector.

A service is an act performed for or in behalf of another individual or group. Services can be remunerated, and make up a very large number of business on the economic landscape, but in some cases services are performed freely as in charity work.

To measure economic well-being GDP is used, which is an indicator that tells economists the total market value of goods and services produced by a nation in any given year. If the GDP is growing, it usually means that more jobs are being produced and the unemployment figure is more favorable.

One of the areas of concern in recent years among some consumers has been the declining quality of customer service. However, retailers are giving it their best to change this perception. For example, if you were to buy something you are not pleased with, say a latex mattress or other household item, you may be able to exchange it or get a refund with no questions asked. There are many money-back guarantees that are boosting consumer confidence.
