Shingles is a viral infection of the nerve roots causing pain, discomfort and a rash that usually spreads on one side of your body lasting about a month. Some people suffer severe pain long after the rash has gone and this condition is called postherpetic neuralgia.

When you contract chicken pox, the virus stays in certain cells in your body. As you age or if your immune system is weakened, the virus may break free from these cells and cause shingles. You cannot develop shingles if you have not had chicken pox. The medical name for shingles is varicella-zoster virus and outbreaks can recur. While there is no cure for shingles and the virus will always remain in your system, prompt shingles treatment can ease pain, speed up healing and reduce the risk of complications such as postherpetic neuralgia and other problems.

Shingles is more common in the elderly. So it is likely that bloggers will search the internet on behalf of an elderly friend or relative who is suffering.
