Unlike public transportation, which is known by many to be the chariot of the poor and the very poor alike, skating is known as the chariot of the cool and the very cool alike.

Skating and skateboarding were born sometime between 1940 and 1950 in California. Originally, it was seen as an alternative for die-hard surfers and surfer bums when the waves weren't that great or were unsurfable.

Since its invention, the skateboard has been the grandfather of many other inventions and creations. The "Rip Stick" is a variation of the skateboard that has a pivot rod between the two halves of the board that enable the rider to rotate both halves of the board to propel themselves forward. The "skike" is a mix between an inline skate and a bike. The user straps a two-wheeled skike to each foot in much the same way someone would use a rollerblade.

But whether you are riding a skateboard, a Skike, or a Rip Stick, remember that the most important aspect is safety. Before you try an ollie, kickflip, or a grind, make sure you have a helmet and kneepads on. Remember, helmets and kneepads are not nearly as confining as a wheelchair.
